モリッシーが、NYブロードウェイデビューを飾り、7日間のライブを大成功で終わらせた。この公演は、会場がわずか1500人という小さいキャパであったばかりか、「過去のヒット曲を披露する」というのがテーマでもあった。なので、ザ・スミスのヒット曲が次々に演奏された。私は初日を観たのだけど、7回のライブでセットリストが大きく変わったのも貴重だった。
最終日となった5月11日は、これまで一度もライブで演奏されたことのなかったザ・スミスの曲“I Won't Share You”が披露された。ローリング・ストーン誌が報じている。映像はこちら。

ブロードウェイでミュージシャンがレジデンシーを行なうというのは、ブルース・スプリングスティーンに続いてモリッシーが2人目。長年のファンでも、会場が小さいし、一生に一度の体験になるかもしれないと思って観に行った人が多かったはずだ。ロッキング・オンでも昔良く写真を撮ってもらっていたカメラマンのチャーリー・グロスもそう言って行っていた。
チケットの値段は100ドルー400ドル。1600ドルのホテル付きなども売られていた。マドンナもこれから3000人キャパの会場で12日間もライブを行なう。アリーナでやれば2日間で終わる人数だ。チケットは2000ドルから52ドル。アーティストにとってライブが大事な収入源となった今、キャリアの長いアーティストは様々な方法で観客をエンターテインし続けないといけないということでもあると思う。
ちょっと関係ないが、モリッシーがNY公演を行なっている最中に、ジョニー・マーもNYライブをしていた。しかし、マンハッタン内には来なくて、聞いたこともない遠くの会場でやっていたのが少し悲しかった。
